I’ve never been one for setting New Year’s Resolutions. I’ve always thought the tradition corny, or impossible to fulfill. And maybe we don’t have to a set a resolution, but I do think that it is a good time to take stock of what changed in 2016, and what we want to change moving into 2017.
There are two major differences in our lives now since 2015. My husband will end the year down almost 90 pounds from where he started and I will be down over 40. For the first eight months of the year we dieted and that is the first time in my life I’ve ever counted calories or paid attention to what I put in my body and it has paid off. I want to continue to eat healthier and maker better diet decisions in 2017.
The other difference is the change we’ve made in stepping outside our routine. For a while now we’ve taken the easy comfortable route outside of work. We’re exhausted from the day, from the week, so we come home and we play video games and binge on Netflix and pat ourselves on the back for getting through another work week.
We made an effort to change that habit this year by trying to explore more of our state. We traveled to San Antonio for the first time in January, we’ve made a few trips to Austin for different events. We went camping at Caddo Lake and swimming at Dinosaur Valley State Park. I made the effort to explore when I was traveling for work which led me to Palo Duro Canyon and the Wyler Aerial Tramway.
So I want to continue this in 2017 and hopefully make it a more consistent thing. As you know, we have our big two week trip to London coming up in just two months. A few other things on my travel/exploration list for 2017? The Perot Museum right here in Dallas has been left unseen by us for the few years it’s been open. We’ve lived seven hours from New Orleans for almost five years and still haven’t made that trip or the trip to Little Rock.
I want to see even more Texas State Parks even if we just go for the day or a few hours like we have with Mission Tejas or Dinosaur Valley. There are over 90 state parks and at the rate we’re going it will take us decades to see them all. We will travel home to Minnesota at least once in 2017 for a wedding and we’ll be traveling to Las Vegas for my in-laws recently relocated for work. That will be my second trip there and my husband’s first.
Our lives are good but I want them to be great and getting out and exploring the city we’re lucky enough to live in, the state we take pride in, the country we adore and the world we are grateful for is how I feel we do it. And with the resolution to experience more is my resolution to write about it more and be more consistent about it.
Happy New Year everybody! Let me know what resolutions you’ve set and how well you stuck to yours in 2016.
